What Is a Multi-Currency Account? What to Check Before Choosing

A multi-currency account is a market label often used for products that manage several currencies through one interface. Receiving, holding, converting, withdrawing and sending capabilities depend on the provider, country, account type and user eligibility. The label does not establish that a product is a bank account or that all products confer the same rights.
This guide explains the term, distinguishes Vietnamese bank foreign-currency accounts from a receiving model such as IRID, and provides six comparison criteria. Read the product scope separately from applicable law; displaying several currencies does not establish unrestricted holding or withdrawal rights.
What is a multi-currency account?
A multi-currency product may support several currencies, but the lists available for receipt, holding, conversion and payout can differ. Check each function rather than relying only on an advertised currency count.
Do not assume single-currency accounts always convert every incoming amount automatically, or multi-currency products always retain the original currency until the user chooses to convert. Crediting and conversion depend on account, route and terms. The name alone does not determine bank-account ownership or protection of funds.
Common needs include overseas client receipts, source management and reconciliation. Practical value depends on currencies, routes, fees and records; one account structure does not suit every freelancer, seller or business.
Bank Accounts and IRID Are Different Products
Providers can have different legal status and structures. To avoid generalising across the market, the table compares a Vietnamese bank foreign-currency account with IRID specifically, not every non-bank multi-currency service.

Who actually needs a multi-currency account?
Identify whether you need receipt, holding, conversion or payout. Frequency is only one factor: amount, minimum fees, sender, records and Vietnam availability also matter. Occasional receipts do not prove any ordinary account will meet the need.
- Freelancers and creators: compare net costs, time to usable funds and records. Do not assume cost is unimportant or that conventional channels offer no tracking.
- Cross-border online sellers: match receipts to orders and platform conditions. No external marketplace or platform has yet been confirmed for IRID receipts; ask before changing receiving details.
- Exporters and SMEs: check beneficiary details, contracts and invoices, reporting and sharing with accountants. Data export and automatic order matching must be confirmed for the product.
- Individuals with income or family overseas: establish the purpose and eligibility. Family transfers, service income and reimbursements are not automatically the same legal or tax case.
The legal framework in Vietnam: what is and is not allowed
These are reference points for questions to a bank or provider, not legal conclusions for every case.
A foreign-currency account at an authorised bank is subject to opening, verification and usage conditions. Identify residence status, individual or entity type, nationality and purpose before consulting the relevant provisions.
Circular 16/2014/TT-NHNN and amendments govern accounts at authorised banks. Do not apply a list for one customer category to every user or to IRID.
For a receipt, ask the bank about permitted sources, currency, sender details and records for that transaction. Foreign origin or a valid contract does not waive review and documentation conditions.
For holding, selling, withdrawing or using foreign currency, confirm rights for the account and user category. A bank-account right does not establish that IRID provides savings, foreign-currency withdrawal or sending abroad.
An article summary is insufficient to conclude that a bank must accept or reject a receipt. Present the situation and supporting records for guidance under current provisions.

New rules in force from 19 September 2026
Circular 39/2026/TT-NHNN takes effect on 19 September 2026, adds provisions concerning non-resident foreign credit institutions’ accounts and amends responsibilities under Article 9. It does not rewrite every individual’s receipt and usage rights.
The amended Article 9 requires authorised institutions to specify, check and retain appropriate records. Relevant parties supply records as requested and are responsible for authenticity. This is not an IRID-specific checklist or licence.
Ask what applies to the actual transaction and follow additional requests. Do not infer every file becomes stricter or that preparation guarantees the fastest processing.
Holding foreign currency does not mean you can spend it domestically
The right to receive or hold foreign currency and the right to use it in a transaction are different questions.
Circular 32/2013/TT-NHNN and amendments restrict domestic use of foreign exchange while providing permitted exceptions. Check the particular transaction rather than treating the general principle as a ban on all holding or use.
Conversion conditions, payout currency and use depend on the account or service. Do not assume every receipt must be converted to VND immediately or every product permits discretionary conversion timing.
IRID’s confirmed process is a user withdrawal request for VND payout to a linked domestic bank account. That product feature does not establish that every lawful service in Vietnam must end in VND.
Six criteria and the questions to ask before you sign
Rather than comparing brands, compare mechanisms. The six questions below apply to any provider, in either group of solutions.

Check responsibilities, conditions, fees, records and support together. A licence does not itself guarantee funds. As a UK example, the FCA distinguishes safeguarding at certain non-bank providers from FSCS protection; that arrangement must not be assumed for IRID or every country.
Mistakes that get applications rejected or transactions held
These issues can lead to additional requests or delay. There is no basis for attributing most problems to user preparation.
- Check names, identity, tax-registration information and beneficiaries. Ask about spelling or format differences instead of altering original records or assuming every discrepancy means rejection.
- Use accepted documents and live capture where requested. Unclear images may require recapture; photography tips do not guarantee verification.
- Businesses provide representative, ownership or control information as requested. These roles differ; beneficial ownership cannot always be determined from a registration certificate alone.
- Prepare source-specific records even for small amounts where requested. Documentation is not necessarily limited to high-value transfers, and submission does not guarantee quick approval.
Understanding FinFan’s IRID
IRID is not a substitute name for every type of multi-currency account.
IRID (Inbound Routing & Identity Descriptor) is an international receiving identifier developed by FinFan. Each customer is assigned a unique code for identification, tracking and reconciliation; it is not a bank account issued by FinFan.
Through the partner network, IRID supports 30+ receiving currencies converted to USD before reaching Vietnam. Outside that route, currencies are USD, CAD, AUD, EUR, GBP and SGD. Receiving support does not establish domestic holding or withdrawal in each currency.
Users request VND payout to a linked domestic bank account. The scope described is inward receipt and domestic payout; do not treat IRID as sending abroad or an interest-bearing deposit product.
The platform supports source tracking, withdrawal statuses and reporting under current functionality. Code assignment, verification and processing are conditional: users do not issue their own identifiers or receive unconditional approval for every receipt. No external marketplace or platform has yet been confirmed for IRID receipts.
Frequently asked questions
Is it legal for a Vietnamese person to open a multi-currency account?
Distinguish the actual product and provider. A Vietnamese bank account is subject to bank and regulatory conditions. For an overseas service, check eligibility for Vietnam residents and available functions; there is no universal approval for every multi-currency product.
How does a technology provider’s multi-currency platform differ from a bank's foreign currency account?
Bank and non-bank products can differ in legal status, rights and protection arrangements. Not every technology service is merely software. Understand IRID through its specific definition and process, not as a model for every provider.
How long does it take to receive foreign currency from abroad?
Distinguish application review, platform receipt, withdrawal processing and bank crediting. Timing depends on route, business days, cut-offs and records. Ask about each stage rather than treating the speed of one stage as an end-to-end SLA.
Is money received from abroad subject to tax?
Determine the receipt’s actual nature, recipient and applicable rules. Not every overseas receipt is taxable or exempt. Net VND after fees is not automatically the filing basis. Ask an accountant, tax authority or adviser about the specific case.
Conclusion
Choose according to receipt, management, conversion and usage needs. A multi-currency label does not establish legal category, currency rights or Vietnam availability.
Before using a product, confirm provider, currency scope, records, fees, timing and reconciliation data. These checks improve understanding but do not eliminate all risk or guarantee processing.
A sensible next step is to review your current international funds against the six criteria above, and only then choose a solution.

Disclaimer
IRID is developed by FinFan, the brand of Nhat Phuong Joint Stock Company (Best Way Corporation), to support foreign-currency receipts and transaction management. Users request withdrawals for VND payout to a linked domestic bank account. FinFan is not a bank and does not provide deposit services.
